Which way should you do a sum? Mastering orders of operation will tell you how to work out a sum with different tasks – and this exercise will help you to remember the order to tackle a sum in.

When dealing with a sum with different tasks in, you should work out any sums in brackets first, then exponents (such as five squared, which equals 25), then division or multiplication and finally addition or subtraction.

This interactive exercise offers two ways to help you test your ability. First, it presents you with a sum and asks you to click on the tasks in the right order to reach the final answer. There’s no time limit, and you can work it out at your leisure. Then, the second way has blocks falling down the screen and you have to click on them in the right order of operation before they reach the bottom.

An activity for fourth and fifth graders, this is a good way to drill your skills away from the classroom.
